Reindeer Hunting

Reindeer hunting is an exclusive experience . The Icelandic reindeer population is only 2.500 - 3.000 animals. The Icelandic reindeer was brought to Iceland from Hardangervidda, a mountain range in Norway, around 1780. Since then they have developed by natural selection to survive the Icelandic winter, that is considerably more harsh than in Norway.

The Icelandic reindeer only live in the wild and there have never been any domesticated reindeer in Iceland. There are only 300 hunting licences issued yearly and most of them are allocated to local hunters. We are only able to receive 12 - 15 foreign reindeer hunters each year.

Hunting season : From August 1st until September 15th. The prime hunting period is from August 15th until September 1st.

Guides : We offer the best professional guides available. They live on the east coast and know the hunting grounds as the palm of their hands. Our guides have been hunting and guiding for over 20 years in this area.

Accommodation : During the hunt in warm and comfortable mountain lodges. In Reykjavik a first class hotel.

What to bring : For this kind of hunting rifles 6,5 - 8mm are most suitable. Semi-auto or pumps not allowed. Warm clothing and underwear, rain/wind wear and waterproof hiking boots. Temperatures can vary from 0° - 20° centigrade, but generally the climate is mild in August with an average around 10° degrees centigrade. Upon booking we supply a deatailed item list.

Price and payments : Upon request we will quote a price for your dream hunt, wether it is for a standard hunt or a hunt tailored to your own personal wishes.

Not included : Fee for extra trophies, preparation and shipment of trophy according to customer wishes, ammunition if rifles are provided by the outfitter, alchoholic beverages, extra days in Reykjavik, international flights.

A standard reindeer hunting program consists of six days, thereof four full days of hunting. For best results we suggest a hunting group with 2 or 3 hunters. However, itinerary can be tailored to special wishes if booking availability allows.

The outfitter will clear your weapons (if you prefer to bring your own) through customs and then transfer you to Reykjavik domestic airport. Day 2 : After a good night´s sleep and breakfast in a warm and comfortable mountain lodge you take off early to the hunting grounds. If neccessary we hunt until dusk, then return to our hunting lodge for dinner. Meals during the day will be from lunch boxes.

Day 3-4 : We wake up early for breakfast and then hunt all day and then return to our hunting lodge.
