Standard ptarmigan hunting program consists of 6
days, thereof 4 days of hunting. For best results we suggest a
hunting group with 2 - 4 hunters.
A standard program :
Day 1 : In the
afternoon you will arrive at Keflavik International Airport
where you will be met by the outfitter. The outfitter will
clear your weapons through customs and then transfer you to
Reykjavik. That evening you will arrive at your hunting
cabin.
Day 2 : We wake up before sunrise for a heavy
breakfast. During the early morning light we head for the hunt
area. The area where we hunt will depend on the amount of snow
in the area. Sometimes we will be hunting in a area with brush
cover, or if snow is scarce, we might head up into the
mountains where the ground is very barren.
Day 3 : Same schedule.
Day 4 : Same schedule.
Day 5 : Same schedule. At the the end of the day you
will return to Reykjavik by an airplane or car, depending on
where you will be hunting. Late dinner in Reykjavik.
Day 6 : Transfer to Keflavik International Airport
early next morning, arriving at a European airport around
noon.
Hunting season : From October 15th until December
20th. The prime hunting period is from October 15th until
November 10th. Please keep in mind that the daylight becomes
shorter each week during the hunting season.
The hunt :
The day´s result for a ptarmigan hunter can be anywhere
between 1 - 50 birds per day per hunter. This depends of
course on the shooting ability of each hunter, but weather
will certainly also influence the result. When hunting in
brush cover we usually hunt with dogs.
What to bring : Shotguns gauge 12, double barrel or
3-shot pump or semi-automatic are the most suitable. Warm
waterproof / windproof outer clothing, warm underwear and
preferably Gore-Tex hiking boots. Temperatures can vary from
-15° - +5° centigrade, but generally the temperature is
fluctuating from -5° to +5 centigrade. Upon booking we supply
a detailed item list. No limit !!! |
